I enjoy a well made documentary about important events in history. But this documentary has so many lies it is worthless. It is ridiculous to claim the Germans used Zeppelins to attack England in WWI. It is a huge, slow moving vehicle. If you aim any type of gun firing projectiles then you cannot miss. The punctured Zeppelin would explode due to the volatile gases (hydrogen). The projectile does not need to be incendiary. The Hindenburg exploded and the catastrophe undermined the development lighter than airships. This event happened over Lakehurst, New Jersey on May 6, 1937. This was just 2 years before the start of WWII if you consider the NAZI-Soviet joint invasion of Poland as the start of WWII. It is ridiculous to claim that airships were used by the Germans to attack England. If this so called documentary can make such a ludicrous claim then the rest of this trash, pretending to be documentary, is garbage. Why a reputable organization like the BBC would produce garbage is beyond me.

One thing WW1 saw the end of was the archaic Napoleonic era tactic of sending hordes of men charging headlong into gunfire. The advent of the machine gun put into that insanity rather quickly!

Even in this episode, with its extended credits, we still do not find out the name of the script-writer. Yet this anonymous man or woman, probably commuting in from Bucks on the Metropolitan line each day for a salary of £10 a week, was touched by the hand of God. It's 26 episodes of some of the finest prose ever written in the English language.

The western front must have been horrendous. My grandpa suffered rheumatism the rest of his life after the 3 years in France. However the siege of Kut sounds every bit as awful, and worse if you were taken prisoner.

Lansdowne memorandum, November 16 1916- "Generations will have to come and go before the country recovers from the financial ruin and the destruction of the means of production which are taking place." He was correct. Britain finished paying its war debt to the USA in 2015.

Today's BBC could not make this, any more than a camel can pass through the eye of a needle. Still, there is some consolation in coming from a country that was once capable of great works like this.

"Give us the Old Bull and Bush, cornet Joe." Thank God the BBC had the foresight to collect these testimonies from people who were actually there. This is worth a thousand times the various other channels out there cashing in on the war, and often just repeating information which is better told here.

The BBC could not make anything this good in the current era. There is nonetheless some consolation in coming from a country that was once able to do it.

Amazing series. Probably gives the British a bit to much credit for the final end of the war, but it's the BBC so that's quite understandable. 🙂 On the whole it is one of the best documentary series I've ever seen on any subject period.

Quite rightly, we are told about the increase in the German population after 1870. However the Russian population was growing faster - in both absolute and percentage terms. AJP Taylor often reminds us that the Germans wanted war sooner rather than later, as they watched the Russian threat grow.
